일본에서 야생 원숭이들이 집과 학교에 쳐들어가 사람들을 습격하는 일이 잇따르고 있습니다. 그물과 덫 등으로 원숭이를 잡아보려 했지만 성과가 없자 현지 경찰이 마취총을 꺼내 들기로 했다고 일본 언론들이 보도했습니다.
일본 야마구치현은 지난달 8일부터 최근까지 야마구치시와 그 주변에서 야생 원숭이의 공격을 받은 45명이 다쳤다고 밝혔습니다. 아이부터 노인까지 원숭이는 공격을 가리지 않았습니다.
사이토 마사토 야마구치 시청 관계자는 CNN과의 인터뷰에서 "사람들의 손과 다리가 긁히고 목과 배가 물렸다"며 "(피해자들은) 원숭이가 다리에 달라붙고 몸에서 떼어내려고 하면 물거나 뒤에서 달려들었다고 했다"고 전했습니다.
이번에 주민들을 습격한 원숭이는 '눈원숭이'로도 불리는 '일본짧은꼬리원숭이(Japanese macaques)'입니다. 사람처럼 온천욕을 즐기는 것으로 유명하기도 합니다. 이 원숭이들은 미닫이문이나 열려있는 창문을 통해 가정집으로 들어가 주민들을 공격한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
일본에서는 1990년대 이후 대규모 산림녹화사업을 했는데, 이때 이 원숭이들의 서식지가 주민들이 사는 공간 쪽으로 옮겨가면서 원숭이와 사람의 관계에 영향을 미친 것이라는 분석도 나오고 있습니다.
모리시게 요시타카 야마구치현 관계자는 "이런 일은 매우 이례적"이라며 "이 원숭이는 일본 전역에서 발견되지만 인간 공동체와 이렇게 가까이 접촉한 것은 드문 일"이라고 설명했습니다.

Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture says 45 people who were attacked by wild monkeys in and around Yamaguchi City have been injured since the 8th. Monkeys, from children to the elderly, didn't block the attack.
"People's hands and legs were scratched and their necks and stomachs were bitten," a Yamaguchi City Hall official said in an interview with CNN. "The victims said the monkey stuck to his legs and tried to take it off his body, but it bit or ran from behind."
The monkey that attacked the residents this time was the Japanese short-tailed macaques, also called the "eye monkey." It is also famous for enjoying hot spring baths like humans. The monkeys allegedly attacked residents by entering their homes through sliding doors or open windows.
In Japan, large-scale forestation projects have been carried out since the 1990s, and some analysts say that the monkeys' habitats have affected the relationship between monkeys and humans as they move toward the space where residents live.
"This is very unusual," said an official from Yoshitaka Yamaguchi Prefecture in Morishige. "The monkey is found all over Japan, but it is rare to have such close contact with the human community."
